Patient Safety Requirement

MOC Part II: Lifelong Learning & Self-Assessment

If you are in Track 2 of MOC, you will complete 1 activity that qualifies as patient safety during the 10-year MOC cycle. There are 2 options for completion: 1) read patient safety articles and answer related questions while participating in the Quarterly Questions program, or 2) choose a CME activity that qualifies as patient safety as listed on the ACCME CME Finder menu.

Quarterly Questions Option

While participating in the Quarterly Questions program, you may choose to meet the requirement for patient safety by selecting 3 patient safety-designated journal articles from the ABO's reading list and answering 2 questions about each article.

  • You may read all 3 articles in a single year of Quarterly Questions or spread this activity out over 3 years
  • Patient safety articles must be completed as part of standard Quarterly Questions participation (in other words, you are not permitted skip the clinical knowledge section or other article questions in the year(s) you choose to participate)

CME Finder Option

To meet the patient safety requirement using a CME activity that qualifies as patient safety, visit the ACCME’s CME Finder, filter for Patient Safety, and select from the list of options. If you complete an approved activity via the CME Finder, this information will be relayed back to the ABO and reflected on your status page.

What happened to the online ABO Patient Safety Module? As of December 31, 2018, the ABO discontinued its patient safety activity in favor of the two activity options listed above. If you completed the ABO's patient safety activity during your current 10-year MOC cycle, you do not need to complete an additional activity.
