Enroll in MOC
Two enrollment pathways are available to diplomates certified prior to 1992 or whose certificates have lapsed.

Getting Started

Manage and access your Maintenance of Certification (MOC) activities using your Status Page. Log in to your MOC Status Page to:

  • View a simple tracking page that houses all MOC activities. This page shows your status for each activity.
  • Access and complete required MOC activities as well as optional features such as the Public Profile Generator and CME Tracker.
  • Create a public-facing status page to share more information about yourself with your patients and link to your achievements in board certification directly from your practice website.

2020 ABO MOC Program

Required activities are slightly different for Track 1 diplomates whose certificates expire on or before December 31, 2020. For everyone else, the requirements for MOC are listed below.

What's the requirement?

How does it work?

Why is it important?

At all times, hold an active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in all jurisdictions of the United States or Canada in which you hold a license.

The ABO receives quarterly licensure updates from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), so you will not be asked to manually update this information unless something is missing.

Ensuring that all ABO diplomates maintain valid, unrestricted medical licenses keeps you in the company of board-certified colleagues who share your commitment to professional, ethical practice.

Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment

Every two years, earn and attest to an average of 50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, including 16 credits that qualify as self-assessment.

Earn CME from the accredited providers of your choice. The ABO does not require you to upload course certificates or CME transcripts; simply log in to the ABO website and attest to completion of CME every 2 years.

This step of MOC encourages you to focus your attention on enhancing your knowledge about the topics that best serve you and your patients.

Complete one activity that qualifies as patient safety.

The patient safety requirement may be met by reading patient safety articles as part of participation in the Quarterly Questions program or choosing a patient safety activity from the ABMS Continuing Certification Directory.

As physicians, we pledge first and foremost to “do no harm.” This activity facilitates learning about ways we can protect eye care patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment, & Skills

Meet the annual passing standard on the Quarterly Questions® program at least 5 times before the end of the 10-year cycle.

Questions may be answered online, on-demand. New content is available annually and released in quarterly segments. Questions fall into two categories: knowledge-based questions pertaining to everyday clinical practice knowledge and questions based on peer-reviewed journal readings.

The program helps improve everyday practice knowledge in the subspecialty area(s) of your choice and builds new clinical knowledge through the reading of “must-read” peer-reviewed journal articles.

Improvement in Medical Practice

Complete two activities from the Improvement in Medical Practice Menu

Choose two of the following:

> Read quality improvement-focused articles and answer related questions as part of participation in the Quarterly Questions program. Please note: this option may be used to meet the requirement only once.

> Design your own Improvement in Medical Practice project using a standard quality improvement methodology for yourself or as a group, or choose a COVID-19 project template. Advance ABO review and approval is required.

> Choose one (1) of five (5) specially designated American Academy of Ophthalmology CME activities.

> Participate in a qualified Multi-Specialty Portfolio Project.

Participation in an improvement activity opens a new window into your practice patterns and outcomes. Perhaps you’ll spot a trend in your practice data that you hadn’t noticed before or a performance gap you could close with the implementation of a simple intervention.

Activity Schedules

Because the program for MOC has evolved over time, there are now 2 tracks for MOC. The requirements for each track are based on the expiration date of your current certificate.

  • MOC Track 1 (certificate expiration dates on or before 12/31/2020)
  • MOC Track 2 (certificate expiration dates on or after 12/31/2021)
